Tier List Overview

In Nioh 3, Team Ninja has once again proven that the true star of the show isn't a single protagonist, but the staggeringly deep combat sandbox. With the introduction of the new Shifting Stances mechanic and the addition of the Kanabō and Bladed Naginata, the build variety has exploded. However, not weapons and builds are created equal when facing the game's brutal Abyssal Void realms and the new Kami-tier bosses.

This tier list ranks the absolute best weapons and builds in Nioh 3 based on their overall DPS output, safety profiles, Ki management, and consistency across both solo and co-op play. Whether you are just transitioning into the endgame or pushing for the deepest Abyssal Void floors, understanding where your weapon of choice lands in the meta is crucial for survival in feudal Japan's deadliest supernatural war.

S Tier

These are the undisputed kings of Nioh 3. S Tier picks feature unparalleled burst damage, intrinsic guard-breaking capabilities, or massive AoE coverage that trivializes some of the game's most agonizing encounters. If you want the path of least resistance to victory, pick from this tier.

Odachi – Overflowing Ki Crusher

The Odachi remains a perennial powerhouse, but in Nioh 3, it has reached a terrifying new peak thanks to the new Shifting Stance mechanic. By utilizing the "Moonlit Snow" skill in Mid Stance and seamlessly shifting into a High Stance heavy attack, players can execute infinite loops that drain enemy Ki to zero in seconds. Against the game's highly aggressive Yōkai Shift bosses, the Odachi’s massive reach allows you to punish whiffed animations from a safe distance. Its only minor flaw is its sluggish dodge speed, but this is entirely mitigated by the newly introduced "Phantom Step" passive, which grants Odachi users I-frames during their Ki Pulses.

Dual Swords – Flicker Shadow Burst

If the Odachi is about sustained pressure, the Dual Swords are the apex of burst damage. The Nioh 3 meta heavily favors critical hits, and no weapon crits harder or more frequently than Dual Swords. The "Sign of the Cross" skill, when paired with the new Kuro Kabuto Grace set, allows you to stack absurd amounts of Familiarity and Critical Damage. By entering Low Stance, applying poison or paralysis with quick slashes, and then executing the "Blade Spin" finisher, you can delete half a boss's health bar before they can finish their wind-up animation. It requires high APM (actions per minute), but the mechanical ceiling of this build is unmatched.

Kanabō – Earthshatter Grappler

As the newest addition to the roster, the Kanabō had big shoes to fill. It did not just fill them; it shattered them. The Kanabō is fundamentally designed around destroying enemy guards and executing grapple attacks. Its unique "Demolish" mechanic scales off the enemy's current block stability—meaning the longer a boss blocks, the harder they get smashed. When you break a boss's Ki with this weapon, the resulting grapple animation deals bonus strike damage that ignores 50% of enemy armor. Toss in the new "Tremor" status effect (which slows enemy Ki recovery), and you have a weapon that turns even the most defensive, heavily armored samurai bosses into ragdolls.

A Tier

A Tier builds are exceptionally strong, reliable, and fully capable of clearing all endgame content without breaking a sweat. They generally fall just shy of S Tier because they require more specific gear setups, have slightly higher Ki costs, or lack a single defining "broken" interaction that defines the S Tier.

Switchglaive – Elemental Phantom

The Switchglaive has always been the mage's weapon of choice, and Nioh 3 continues this tradition. With the expansion of the Onmyo magic tree, the Switchglaive can now apply four different elemental debuffs simultaneously, triggering the devastating "Chaos" status effect. This build is incredibly safe, as you can kite bosses around the arena while firing off homing water talismans and lightning bolts. The reason it sits in A Tier instead of S is the recent patch 1.04, which slightly nerfed the tick rate of elemental damage-over-time effects, forcing players to rely more on melee attacks to finish the job rather than purely casting.

Kusarigama – Mid-Range Harasser

The Kusarigama's identity has shifted slightly in this installment. The infamous "Spinning Chain" cheese from previous games has been appropriately toned down, but the weapon has been compensated with devastating High Stance counterattacks. The "Beguile" skill now has an expanded parry window that makes it incredibly easy to punish aggressive Yōkai. It remains one of the best tools for controlling crowds in the Abyssal Void, as the weighted end can stagger multiple enemies at once. It loses points simply because its single-target DPS against hyper-armored bosses is noticeably lower than the Odachi or Kanabō.

Spear – Impaler Stance Dancer

The Spear is the gold standard for consistency. The introduction of the "Dragon's Flight" skill in Nioh 3 gives the Spear a leaping thrust that covers massive distance and grants hyper-armor during the wind-up. This makes it incredibly easy to close the gap on bosses that like to backstep. Furthermore, Spear users benefit massively from the new "Pierce" stat, which allows their attacks to bypass a percentage of enemy toughness. It’s a straightforward, highly reliable weapon that excels in every category but doesn't quite reach the dizzying burst damage heights of the Dual Swords.

B Tier

B Tier represents the middle of the pack. These are perfectly viable weapons that will serve you well throughout the main campaign and early endgame. However, when pushed to the absolute limit in the highest tiers of the Abyssal Void, they show noticeable flaws in DPS checks, Ki efficiency, or vulnerability frames.

1 Katana – Balanced Baseline

It pains veteran players to see the iconic Katana here, but Nioh 3's power creep has left it behind. The Katana is meant to be the jack-of-all-trades, master of none, but in a game where bosses have millions of HP and hyper-armor through half their move sets, being "okay" at everything isn't enough. The "Iai Quickdraw" skill still hits hard, but the recovery frames are punishing if you miss. You will spend more time managing your Ki and waiting for openings compared to the safer, higher-damaging weapons in A and S tier. It is the best weapon for learning the game's mechanics, but not for mastering its endgame.

Bladed Naginata – Sweep Specialist

The other new weapon in Nioh 3, the Bladed Naginata, is a blast to play but struggles in the endgame meta. Its defining feature is wide, sweeping horizontal attacks that generate massive amounts of "Animosity" (aggro), making it a phenomenal co-op tanking weapon. However, in solo play, drawing all the aggro while having a relatively slow dodge speed is a death sentence. Its DPS is heavily front-loaded into long combo strings. If a boss interrupts your sweep, your damage plummets. It is an incredible B Tier pick for team players, but a frustrating solo climb.

Tonfa – High-Risk Brawler

The Tonfa relies entirely on overwhelming the enemy with a flurry of low-damage, high-speed strikes to build up the new "Combo Meter" introduced in Nioh 3. When the meter is maxed, Tonfa strikes deal bonus Ki damage. The problem is the immense risk required to build this meter. You must be in point-blank range, and many late-game bosses possess AoE shockwaves or rapid claw swipes that will interrupt your flurry. It requires an intimate, frame-by-frame knowledge of boss movesets to use effectively, making it a high-effort, lower-reward option compared to the Dual Swords.

C Tier

C Tier picks are heavily situational or fundamentally outclassed by other options in the current meta. They suffer from distinct mechanical drawbacks that make them frustrating to use against Nioh 3's hardest challenges. They are generally only recommended for players looking for a specific, self-imposed challenge run.

Axe – Slow and Steady Loser

The Axe has historically struggled in the Nioh franchise, and Nioh 3 is no different. While its raw per-hit damage is massive, its attack speed is abysmally slow. In a game where the meta revolves around breaking enemy Ki to execute grapples, the Axe's Ki damage is surprisingly low for its sluggish swing speed. Furthermore, the Shifting Stance mechanic heavily favors weapons with fluid animation cancelling; the Axe is too heavy to seamlessly flow between stances without eating a massive Ki penalty. You will often find yourself whiffing a Heavy attack, getting punished, and losing half your health bar for a single mistake.

Hand Axe – Ranged Gimmick

The Hand Axe returns with its throwing mechanics intact, but the developers clearly did not design the endgame around thrown weapons. While you can achieve impressive single-hit burst damage by stacking throwing damage bonuses, you completely sacrifice any form of melee pressure. If a boss enters an extended hyper-armor phase, you are reduced to running away and tossing axes, which simply does not output enough DPS to meet the strict enrage timers of Abyssal Void floor 50+ bosses. It is a fun novelty, but a terrible main build.

How to Use This Tier List

Understanding the meta is important, but knowing how to apply it to your own playstyle is what will actually get you through Nioh 3. Keep these critical context notes in mind as you build your character:

  • The Patch 1.05 Loophole: As of the current update, an unintended interaction between the Kuro Kabuto set bonus and the "Flicker" passive allows Dual Swords to permanently maintain maximum critical hit rates. If you are reading this after an upcoming hotfix, expect Dual Swords to potentially drop to A Tier. Always check the latest patch notes before investing heavily into a specific Grace set.
  • Playstyle Supersedes Tier: If you have played 500 hours with the 1 Katana in previous games, you will perform better with the 1 Katana in B Tier than you will with the S Tier Kanabō. Muscle memory and timing are your greatest assets. The tier list measures mathematical potential, not player skill.
  • Synergy Over Isolation: No weapon exists in a vacuum. An A Tier weapon like the Switchglaive becomes an S Tier threat when paired with the new "Soul Release" Onmyo build. Conversely, an S Tier weapon like the Odachi becomes average if you refuse to use the new Shifting Stance mechanic. Your build's supporting skills, Ninja magic, and Guardian Spirits matter just as much as the steel in your hand.
  • Co-op vs. Solo Dynamics: The Abyssal Void scales enemy HP based on the number of players. In a full three-person co-op group, boss fights become marathon endurance tests. Because of this, weapons with high sustain and safe Ki management (like the Spear or Switchglaive) naturally rise in value, while glass-cannon burst builds (like Dual Swords) lose relative effectiveness because they cannot delete the boss before their limited defensive tools run out.
  • Embrace the Shift: Regardless of what weapon you choose from this list, Nioh 3 demands that you use the Shifting Stance mechanic. Staying in one stance for an entire fight is a recipe for death. Master the timing of shifting from Low to Mid for Ki recovery, and Mid to High for burst damage. The weapons ranked highest on this list are the ones that reward this new mechanic the most aggressively.
