Mario Golf Tier List - Best Characters & Builds
Tier List Overview
In the world of Mario Golf: Super Rush, mastering the greens requires more than just knowing how to read the wind. The most crucial decision you will make before hitting the fairway is selecting your character. Unlike traditional golf games where clubs are purely standardized, Mario Golf ties your club set directly to the character you choose. Each character comes with a unique blend of stats—including Power, Stamina, Speed, Control, and Spin—that dictates their club distances, trajectory shapes, and overall effectiveness. Because you cannot mix and match clubs or build custom loadouts, your character is your build. Therefore, ranking the best characters is functionally equivalent to ranking the best builds and weapons in the game.
This tier list ranks the entire roster based on their viability in the game's primary competitive mode: Standard Golf. While Speed Golf and Battle Golf have their own chaotic merits, Standard Golf is the true test of shot-making, course management, and statistical optimization. The rankings take into account raw distance off the tee, the ability to shape shots in heavy winds, spin rates for approach shots, and stamina management for those crucial power shots. Whether you are grinding through the Golf Adventure or climbing the ranks in online matchmaking, understanding these tier placements will help you choose the archetype that best suits your playstyle.

S Tier
The S Tier represents the absolute pinnacle of Mario Golf builds. These characters have such an overwhelming advantage in their specific stat distributions that they can fundamentally break the intended design of certain courses. If your goal is to shoot the lowest possible scores and minimize your handicap, you should be playing one of these characters.
Rosalina
Rosalina is universally considered the best character in Mario Golf: Super Rush, and for good reason. She possesses the highest Control stat in the game, coupled with a remarkably high Spin stat. In a game where wind heavily dictates your shot trajectory, Rosalina's control allows her to completely ignore crosswinds that would force other characters to aim drastically off-target. Her ball goes exactly where you point the cursor. Furthermore, her high spin allows for precise flop shots around the greens, making her virtually immune to tricky pin positions. While her Power is lower than heavy hitters, the consistency she provides translates to significantly fewer penalty strokes, which ultimately results in lower overall scores. She turns difficult approach shots into routine tap-ins.
Bowser
If Rosalina is the queen of consistency, Bowser is the king of raw, unadulterated power. Bowser boasts the highest Power stat in the base game, allowing him to reach par-5s in two shots that other characters cannot even dream of reaching. His sheer distance off the tee means he can often skip entire hazards by simply flying over them. The primary drawback to Bowser is his abysmal Control and Spin, making him incredibly difficult to hit straight. However, in Mario Golf, distance is king. By utilizing power shots and top-spin to maximize carry, a skilled Bowser player can effectively shorten every course on the roster. The learning curve is steep, but the ceiling for low scores is unmatched by anyone outside of the secret unlockables.
Pauline
Pauline is the ultimate "jack of all trades" who leans heavily into a premium build. She features incredibly well-rounded stats, but her standout feature is her unique Special Shot. While most Special Shots are purely offensive (used to disrupt opponents in Speed Golf), Pauline's Special Shot actually heals a portion of her stamina gauge. Because Standard Golf limits the number of power shots you can take based on stamina, Pauline’s ability to self-sustain gives her access to more power shots per round than any other character. This allows her to safely bomb drives over water or out of deep rough without the same statistical punishment other characters face. She combines great distance with reliable control, making her an S-tier pick for players who want power without the extreme penalty of Bowser.

A Tier
A Tier characters are exceptionally strong and are more than capable of shooting under par on any given course. They generally excel in one or two specific areas but have slight statistical flaws that prevent them from reaching the absolute dominance of the S Tier. These characters are highly recommended for players looking to transition away from the top tier without severely compromising their win potential.
Mario
As the face of the franchise, Mario is designed to be perfectly average—but in Mario Golf, perfectly average is actually quite good. Mario’s stats are flawlessly balanced, giving him enough power to reach greens in regulation and enough control to keep out of the deep rough. He is the ideal character for beginners who are still learning the timing mechanics of the game. You will never feel punished by Mario’s club set, but you also won't have the overwhelming distance of Bowser or the wind-negating control of Rosalina. He is a reliable workhorse that will consistently put you in position to make pars and birdies.
Luigi
Luigi is an interesting variation of the balanced build. He trades a small amount of Power and Control for a significantly higher Spin stat compared to Mario. This makes Luigi a phenomenal iron player. If you struggle with dialing in the exact distance of your approach shots, Luigi’s backspin and topspin are incredibly forgiving. He can throw darts at the pin from 150 yards out with ease. However, his slightly lower power means he has to work harder on long par-4s and par-5s. Luigi is an A-tier pick for players who prioritize their short game and iron play over bombing drives off the tee.
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong sits just below Bowser in the power hierarchy, but he offers a slightly more forgiving experience. His Control stat is marginally better than Bowser's, meaning his errant shots won't slice or hook quite as violently into the woods. DK still possesses enough power to reach par-5s in two and bomb over fairway bunkers. The trade-off is that he lacks the spin needed for delicate greenside shots. If you want to play a power game but find Bowser completely unmanageable, Donkey Kong is the perfect stepping stone to learn the aggressive playstyle.
Daisy
Daisy is essentially a slightly altered clone of Peach, leaning a bit more into the Power department at the slight expense of Spin. She fits nicely into the A Tier because she provides above-average distance while remaining incredibly easy to hit straight. Her trajectory is high and soft, which is perfect for holding fast greens. She doesn't have any glaring weaknesses, making her a highly consistent choice for players who find Rosalina's lack of distance frustrating but find Bowser's lack of control too punishing.

B Tier
B Tier characters are decent options that can still yield good results, but they require the player to actively compensate for noticeable statistical deficiencies. These characters often have skewed stat lines that force a very specific playstyle. You can win with them, but you will have to work harder for your birdies than you would with an S or A tier character.
Peach
It might surprise some players to see Peach this low, but her placement comes down to the harsh math of Mario Golf. Peach has exceptional Control and Spin, nearly rivaling Rosalina. However, her Power stat is disastrously low. On courses with long par-4s like Bowser's Castle or Ridgeway, Peach simply cannot reach the greens in regulation without risking everything on a power shot. Being in the fairway means nothing if your next shot is a blind 3-wood into a heavily guarded green. Peach requires absolute perfection in iron play to make up for the strokes she inevitably loses on long holes.
Wario
Wario is a trap for many new players. He looks fast, hits reasonably hard, and has a fun design. Statistically, however, he is a worse version of Donkey Kong. His power is lower, and his control is questionable. He exists in a middle ground where he doesn't hit it far enough to ignore the course layout, but he doesn't hit it straight enough to safely navigate tight fairways. Wario can be effective if you heavily utilize his curve shots to bend the ball around trees, but relying on manual curve adds unnecessary risk to your round.
Waluigi
Waluigi is a pure Control/Spin character whose trajectory is incredibly low and flat. While a low trajectory can be useful in heavy headwinds, it becomes a massive liability when trying to carry water hazards or greenside bunkers. Waluigi's shots tend to roll out significantly more than they fly, making it very difficult to stop the ball near back pins. He is highly situational and requires an intimate knowledge of course topography to use effectively, which keeps him out of the higher tiers.
Boo
Boo is a weird anomaly. His stats are actually quite poor across the board, but his ball has a uniquely high, towering trajectory that can hold greens incredibly well. Unfortunately, that high trajectory makes him a sitting duck for crosswinds. Even a mild breeze will push Boo's ball several yards off its intended line. He is a novelty character whose physics engine interactions actively hinder his ability to post consistently low scores on harder courses.

C Tier
C Tier picks are situational at best and fundamentally flawed at worst. These characters have extreme weaknesses in their builds that prevent them from competing at a high level. They are generally only recommended for players who are doing specific challenge runs or who are desperately trying to grind character-specific achievements in the Golf Adventure mode.
Toad
Toad is the ultimate glass cannon, except he lacks the "cannon" part. He has the highest Speed stat in the game, which is entirely useless in Standard Golf. To compensate for his speed, his Power and Control are severely lacking. Toad hits the ball incredibly short, turning almost every hole into a grueling uphill battle. Even with perfect timing, he simply lacks the yardage to compete with the rest of the roster. Toad is exclusively viable in Speed Golf, where his running speed allows him to dash to the ball faster than anyone else. In Standard Golf, he is a self-imposed handicap.
King Bob-omb
As a DLC addition, many expected King Bob-omb to rival Bowser in power. Instead, he is a deeply flawed character. While his Power is massive, his Control is somehow even worse than Bowser's, and his Special Shot is highly impractical for Standard Golf, as it creates an explosion that can sometimes negatively affect your own ball's lie if not positioned perfectly. Furthermore, his massive size obscures the ball during your backswing, making it surprisingly difficult to nail perfect timing consistently. He is a fun character conceptually, but a nightmare competitively.
Shy Guy
Shy Guy is the definition of mediocre. His stats are uniformly low-to-average, offering no standout strengths to leverage against the competition. He doesn't hit it far, he lacks elite spin for approach shots, and his control is merely passable. Every round played with Shy Guy feels like an uphill battle against the course mechanics. You are better off mastering a high-tier character with a steep learning curve than settling for the comfortable mediocrity of Shy Guy.
Chargin' Chuck
Chargin' Chuck suffers from a severe lack of identity. His stats are geared slightly toward power, but he lacks the sheer distance of the heavyweights. His control is too low to reliably place the ball on the fairway, and his spin is too low to attack pins. The defining feature of his build is meant to be his tackling ability in Battle Golf, but in a pure golfing environment, his statistical profile leaves much to be desired. He is outclassed by nearly every other character in the roster in terms of pure scoring potential.
How to Use This Tier List
Understanding this tier list is only the first step; knowing how to apply it to your own gameplay is what will actually lower your scores. Mario Golf: Super Rush has a very specific mechanical rhythm, and different characters require entirely different mental approaches to course management.
- Context and Course Conditions: Always consider the weather before locking in your character. If you are playing a windy course like Bonny Greens or Ridgeway, an S-tier character like Rosalina becomes practically mandatory. If the wind is calm, Bowser’s lack of control is less punishing, allowing you to leverage his S-tier power to dismantle long courses like Bowser's Castle.
- The Power Shot Economy: Remember that Power Shots are a limited resource governed by your Stamina stat. Characters with low stamina (like Bowser) must be incredibly selective about when they use a power shot off the tee. Conversely, characters like Pauline can liberally use power shots to escape the rough or carry water hazards without worrying about running out of steam late in the round.
- Playstyle Adaptation: If you are a naturally aggressive player who likes to bomb drives and rely on wedges to save you, lean into the power builds (Bowser, DK). If you are a conservative player who prioritizes hitting fairways and taking what the course gives you, control builds (Rosalina, Luigi) will feel infinitely more natural. Forcing a square peg into a round hole—such as trying to play hyper-aggressively with Peach—will only lead to frustration.
- Patches and Updates: It is worth noting that while the core statistical hierarchy of Mario Golf has remained relatively stable since launch, Nintendo has occasionally tweaked minor mechanics like ball physics, wind scaling, and stamina recovery rates. Always pay attention to patch notes, as a slight buff to ball curve mechanics could theoretically elevate a character like Wario, while a nerf to top-spin distance could impact the entire power-meta.
- Skill Overrides Tiers: Finally, remember that this tier list assumes equal mechanical skill. A player who has mastered Bowser's swing timing and understands top-spin optimization will absolutely destroy a novice playing Rosalina. Use this list as a starting point to find an archetype that clicks with your brain, and then put in the reps at the driving range to maximize that character's potential.
