Getting Started
Choosing Your Platform and Version
Before you even create your character, it is crucial to understand which version of Monster Hunter Rise you are playing. The base game and the Sunbreak expansion are available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. If you are playing on PC, strongly consider purchasing the game on Steam rather than the Microsoft Store, as the Steam version has native mod support which becomes invaluable for quality-of-life improvements later in your journey. Regardless of your platform, ensure you install the HD Texture Pack if it is offered to you in the launcher, as it significantly improves the visual fidelity of the game.
Character Creation Basics
Do not stress too much over character creation, but keep a few things in mind. Your character's face and voice cannot be changed later in the game without using external save editors, so make sure you are happy with your facial features. However, your hairstyle, makeup, and armor visuals can be changed at any time using items called Layered Armor or by visiting the game's cosmetic shops in Kamura Village.
Next, you will choose a Palico (your cat companion) and a Palamute (your dog companion). Their appearances are also permanent, so take your time here. Your Palico's initial personality and your Palamute's initial breed have minor effects on their starting behaviors, but you can eventually change these through gameplay, so pick whichever ones look the coolest to you.
Picking Your First Weapon
Monster Hunter Rise features 14 distinct weapon types, and this is the most important choice you will make. There is no "best" weapon. Every weapon is viable for all content, including the hardest endgame bosses. Instead of looking up tier lists, pick the weapon whose moveset looks the most fun to you. The game features a comprehensive training area right at the start of the game where you can test every single weapon against a dummy with infinite health. Spend at least ten minutes with a weapon before committing to it.
If you are completely paralyzed by choice, here is a brief breakdown for absolute beginners:
- Sword and Shield: Fast, agile, allows you to use items while your weapon is drawn. Extremely forgiving.
- Long Sword: Excellent reach, very fluid attacks, and incredibly satisfying combo chains. Highly recommended for first-timers.
- Hammer: Focuses on dealing massive blunt damage to monster heads to cause "KOs" (knocking them out). Very straightforward offense.
- Light Bowgun: Ranged, mobile, and utilizes rapid-fire mechanics. Great if you prefer to keep your distance, though it requires managing ammo crafting.

Core Mechanics
The Hunter's Arsenal: Sharpness and Affinity
If you are using a melee weapon, you must understand Sharpness. Look at the weapon icon in the top right of your HUD. This is a Sharpness gauge. As you hit monsters, the gauge depletes, and your weapon will bounce off tough monster parts, dealing reduced damage and leaving you vulnerable. You must use a Whetstone to sharpen your weapon and restore this gauge. Get into the habit of sharpening when a monster turns its attention to another player or when it is trapped.
Affinity is your critical hit rate. If a weapon has 0% Affinity, it will never land a critical hit. Positive Affinity (e.g., +20%) means you have a 20% chance to deal 25% extra damage on a hit. Negative Affinity means you have a chance to deal 25% less damage. Generally, you want weapons with 0% or positive Affinity.
Monogatari and Elemental Damage
Every monster in Rise has specific weaknesses. These are divided into two categories: Physical Weakness (Blunt, Slashing, Piercing) and Elemental Weakness (Fire, Water, Ice, Thunder, Dragon). Early in the game, raw physical damage is king. However, as you progress into High Rank and beyond, matching your weapon's element to a monster's weakness becomes one of the most significant damage multipliers available to you. Always check the Hunter's Notes (press the touchpad/minus key) after fighting a monster once to see a chart of its elemental weaknesses and weak body parts.
The Wirebug System
The defining feature of Monster Hunter Rise is the Wirebug. This insect-like gadget allows you to grapple onto the environment, perform mid-air dodges, and execute devastating Silkbind Attacks unique to your weapon. You start with two Wirebugs, but eventually unlock a third.
Actionable advice: Do not ignore your Wirebug. Use the Wirefall (press the Wirebug button after being knocked down) to recover instantly. Use Wall Run (aim a Wirebug at a wall while running) to quickly reposition. Most importantly, learn your weapon's Silkbind Attacks, as many of them offer powerful counter-attacks or invincibility frames that will completely change how you approach combat.
Status Ailments
Both you and the monsters can suffer from status ailments. For beginners, the most important one to understand is Stun. If a monster roars, your character will cover their ears and be unable to move for a few seconds. If you have the "Earplugs" skill on your armor, you are immune to this. Failing that, you can use the Wirefall technique the exact moment a roar connects to instantly cancel the stun animation and keep attacking. Other common ailments include Poison, Paralysis, Sleep, and Blast, which are all inflicted by specific weapons and coatings.

Early Game Tips
Complete the Optional Requests
When you arrive in Kamura Village, you will be bombarded with NPCs who have green speech bubbles above their heads. Talk to everyone. These are "Requests." Completing them yields essential rewards like the Palico Gadgets, Palamute Gadgets, and key facility upgrades. For example, finishing the requests for the Canteen Chef unlocks the ability to order Dango (food buffs) before a hunt. Do not skip these, as they are functionally mandatory for a smooth experience.
Eat Before Every Hunt
This cannot be overstated: always eat at the Canteen before leaving the village. The stat boosts you get from a meal are massive. For your first few hunts, focus on Dango that boosts your Health and Defense. As you progress, you will unlock Dango skills like "Dango Booster" (increases the activation rate of other Dango skills) or element-resistance Dangos. Going into a hunt without eating is deliberately crippling your character.
Focus on Armor Skills, Not Defense Numbers
When crafting armor, beginners often just look at the Defense stat and pick whichever piece has the highest number. This is a trap. Armor Skills are the true source of your hunter's power. Look at the bottom of an armor piece's stats to see what skills it provides. Skills like "Attack Boost," "Affinity Sliding," and "Wirebug Whisperer" will vastly improve your damage output and mobility. Mix and match armor pieces from different monsters to create a "set" that synergizes well with your chosen weapon.
Master the Clutch Claw (Briefly)
While less central than in Monster Hunter World, the Clutch Claw (fired with the right stick/pointer) is still useful. You can use it to grapple onto a monster's face and launch yourself forward with a "Flinch Shot," which is highly effective for pushing monsters into traps or off environmental hazards. You can also tenderize parts of the monster to increase the damage that specific body part takes, though in Rise this is less of a mandatory chore than it used to be.
Gather Strategically
Early game quests will ask you to gather herbs, mushrooms, and bones. Do this to build up your initial inventory, but do not waste time meticulously picking every flower on the map during monster hunting quests. Once you unlock the Argosy (a trading ship) and the Submarine functions, you can passively generate basic crafting materials while you are out hunting. Your active hunting time should be spent fighting, not picking weeds.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-committing to attacks: The monster is not a punching bag; it will hit back. Learn your weapon's "combo windows"—the brief moments between attacks where you can roll away. If you mash buttons until your combo finishes, you will get hit. Prioritize survival over dealing one extra hit.
- Ignoring the Palico and Palamute: Your companions are not just cosmetic. Your Palico can heal you, set traps, or detonate bombs depending on the gadget you equip. Your Palamute can be ridden to traverse the map faster and can be used to perform a devastating "Wyvern Ride" combo when you and your dog attack a monster simultaneously. Configure their gadgets in the item box before heading out.
- Chasing the monster constantly: When a monster limps away to sleep and heal, do not immediately sprint after it. Use this time to sharpen your weapon, pop a potion, craft more items, or gather a nearby mining node. Let your Palico track it, or look at the minimap to see where it has gone. Running headlong into a monster's resting area often results in getting ambushed.
- Trying to memorize everything at once: There are hundreds of items, armor pieces, and monsters. Do not try to learn it all on day one. Focus on your specific weapon, learn what your current armor skills do, and figure out how to beat the monster directly in front of you. The game gradually introduces mechanics over the first 20 hours for a reason.
- Getting carried in multiplayer: While playing with friends is fun, having three veteran players kill the monster in two minutes while you watch will not teach you how to play. Spend time in solo play to learn a monster's tells, attack patterns, and openings. You can also start a hunt in single-player, and if you are struggling, open the gate to let other players join mid-hunt.
- Forgetting to craft potions mid-hunt: You can press the start button to open your inventory during a hunt (though it pauses the game in single-player). More importantly, you can open the "Combo List" menu and craft Mega Potions, Max Potions, and Nullberries on the fly. If you run out of healing, you do not have to abandon the quest; you just need to combine Herbs and Potions.
- Panicking when "Mounted" or "Enraged": When a monster is Enraged (eyes glowing, steam coming from its mouth), its attacks become faster and more erratic. Do not try to be aggressive during this phase. Sheathe your weapon, run away, and wait out the rage timer. When another player mounts a monster, do not spam your attacks, as this can trip the mounting player and ruin the mount. Instead, use your Slinger to fire "Flinch Shots" at the monster to help end the mount faster.

Essential Controls & Settings
Key Bindings You Need to Know
While you can view the full manual in-game, these are the bindings you absolutely must internalize:
- Sheathe Weapon (R1/RB/Y): You run much faster with your weapon put away. If you need to cross the map, sheathe your weapon and sprint.
- Focus Camera (L stick click / Right stick click): Pressing this instantly snaps the camera to the monster. If you lose track of the target, click the stick.
- Wirefall (ZL+X / LShift+Space after being knocked down): Your emergency "get up" button. Master this to avoid being combo'd to death.
- Switch Skills Menu (L1+R1 / LB+RB): Opens a radial menu allowing you to swap between different move sets for your weapon mid-hunt. Experiment with these!
- Radial Menu (Hold L1 / LB): Allows you to quickly use items without opening your inventory. Customize this in the settings to put your Mega Potions, Demondrugs, and Armorskins here.
Recommended Settings Tweaks
Before starting your first real hunt, go into the options menu and make these adjustments:
- Camera Type: Change this to "Target Camera" rather than "Free Camera." This makes it so that pressing the Focus Camera button will always snap the camera to the large monster, making tracking significantly easier.
- Controller Gyro (Switch/PC): If playing on Switch or with a Pro Controller on PC, turn on Gyro Aiming for your Bowguns and Bow. It is infinitely more precise than using the right stick for fine adjustments.
- Camera Sensitivity: Increase the horizontal and vertical sensitivity slightly above the default. The default is often too slow to comfortably track a fast-moving monster like a Tigrex or Barioth.
- Monster HP Bar: In the Display settings, ensure the "Monster HP/UI" is set to show the HP bar at the top of the screen. While veterans might turn this off, as a beginner, knowing exactly how close a monster is to dying or changing zones is incredibly helpful for managing your items.
- Controller Vibration: Keep this ON. The controller vibration is actually a gameplay mechanic; it provides distinct tactile feedback for when a monster is about to roar or when your weapon is about to bounce, allowing you to react before the visual cue finishes.
Progression System
Low Rank vs. High Rank
Monster Hunter Rise is divided into two primary progression tiers: Low Rank (LR) and High Rank (HR). Low Rank serves as a prolonged tutorial. You will fight smaller, simpler monsters and gather basic materials. The armor you craft here will be outclassed very quickly.
Once you complete the 4-Star village quests and watch the credits roll, you unlock High Rank via the Hub (multiplayer) quests. High Rank introduces new, more aggressive monsters, new armor sets, and entirely new mechanics. The most important change is the introduction of Armor Spheres, which are used to upgrade the defense of any piece of armor you are wearing. In High Rank, it is no longer about crafting entirely new armor every few hunts, but rather finding a set with skills you like and investing Armor Spheres into it to boost its defense.
Hub vs. Village Quests
There are two quest boards in Kamura Village: The Village Chief's quests (single-player only) and the Hub Quests (designed for 1 to 4 players). You must do both. Village quests scale for one player and follow a specific narrative. Hub quests are balanced for multiplayer and feature different, usually harder, monster encounters. Progressing through the Hub ranks unlocks High Rank, which is the true start of the game's deep build-crafting. Do not make the mistake of ignoring the Hub just because you prefer playing solo; you can absolutely clear Hub quests by yourself, and the game even gives you a "Lone Wolf" ticket bonus for doing so.
Master Rank (Sunbreak Expansion)
If you purchase the Sunbreak expansion, a third tier is introduced after reaching HR 7: Master Rank (MR). This completely resets your progression, introduces even harder variants of monsters (like Blood Orange Barioth or Lunagaron), and adds a new suite of armor skills and weapons. The progression loop remains the same: hunt monsters, craft armor with better skills, use new materials to upgrade your defense, and repeat.
The Rampage
Early in the game, you will be introduced to "Rampage" quests. These are tower-defense style missions where you defend gates from waves of monsters. While they offer unique installation weapons like ballistae and cannons, they are generally considered the weakest part of Rise. Play through them to unlock the associated upgrades for your village defenses, but do not feel obligated to grind them. Once High Rank unlocks, you can largely ignore Rampage quests unless you need specific materials from the monsters featured in them.
Resources & Where to Find Help
In-Game Resources
Before looking outside the game, familiarize yourself with the internal tools. The Hunter's Notes section in your start menu is a goldmine. Once you encounter a monster, its page will populate with its elemental weaknesses, the status ailments it is susceptible to, the body parts that take the most damage, and the exact materials you can carve from it. If you are unsure what to bring against a specific monster, check its Hunter's Note first.
Additionally, the Training Area in the village allows you to test your gear against a moving dummy. This dummy does not fight back, making it the perfect place to practice your weapon's Silkbind attacks, figure out switch skill combos, and test how different armor skills feel without the pressure of a timer.

When you need to find specific endemic life, gathering nodes, or hidden items, do not wander around
