In Valhalla, dropping the Berserker armor into your inventory at hour two actually sabotages the early-game foraging loop. The game is designed around scrounging for raw materials in the freezing mountains of Norway to incrementally upgrade your basic Raven Clan armor. When you equip a mythical-tier Berserker set immediately, you skip the mechanical friction that teaches you the game's upgrade economy. You gain immediate combat dominance. You lose the psychological reward of finding new loot for the first twenty hours.
Ubisoft’s edition naming conventions require a bit of decision archaeology to parse. The Deluxe Edition exists in a strange middle ground. It is not the Gold Edition (which includes the Season Pass) and it is not the Complete Edition (which includes the massive Dawn of Ragnarök expansion). The Deluxe package purely alters your starting inventory. The Berserker gear itself heavily favors a reckless, damage-trading playstyle. Your first major bottleneck is getting to England. Many new players try to clear every glowing dot on the map in the Norway prologue. Do not do this. The game's actual mechanical systems remain locked behind an invisible wall until you establish your settlement across the sea. Once you arrive in England, building priority matters far more than the game implies. Construct the Hidden Ones' Bureau first. Doing so unlocks the Leap of Faith and the Order of the Ancients hunting menu. Without the Bureau, you literally cannot perform series-staple assassinations from haystacks, and you miss out on a massive web of assassination targets that yield high-tier runes and abilities.
Combat pacing is dictated entirely by the stamina bar and your skill tree pathing. Light attacks recover stamina. Heavy attacks, dodging, and missing swings drain it. If you are relying on the Deluxe Edition’s Berserker gear, your goal should be rushing the Bear section (the red nodes) of the massive constellation skill tree. You are looking specifically for the Heavy Dual Wield node. This single unlock fundamentally breaks the combat economy in your favor. It allows you to hold a two-handed greatsword in one hand and a spear in the other. The spear provides rapid stamina recovery through quick pokes, while the greatsword delivers devastating heavy finishers. This specific weapon combination creates an edge case where your attack animations trigger faster than enemy hyper-armor can respond, allowing you to stun-lock heavily shielded Zealots that would otherwise require tedious parry-baiting.
Misconceptions and Time Investment Realities
The most pervasive misconception about Assassin's Creed Valhalla is that you need to engage with every icon on the map to stay adequately leveled. The map categorizes points of interest into three colors: Wealth (gold), Mysteries (blue), and Artifacts (white). Chasing white Artifact icons—which are mostly flying tattoo designs and Roman masks—yields zero mechanical advantage. If your goal is to optimize your time-to-completion ratio, ignore them entirely.
Instead, treat blue Mysteries as your primary leveling engine. These are short, two-minute world events that require no menu-diving or quest-log tracking. They grant massive chunks of experience points, often yielding a full skill point per completion. A player who does five local Mysteries will out-level a player who spends an hour grinding random enemy encampments.
Resource management also confuses returning players because Valhalla splits its economy into two distinct silos. Upgrading your personal weapons and ration pouches requires Leather and Iron Ore. You get these by hunting animals and breaking obsidian rock formations in the wild. Upgrading your settlement requires Supplies and Raw Materials. You only get these by triggering formal River Raids on monasteries. If you hit a difficulty wall and find yourself dying constantly, the problem is rarely your damage output. The bottleneck is usually your sustain. You need more rations. Raiding a dozen churches will not give you the leather needed to upgrade your healing pouch. You have to go into the woods and hunt.

By hour forty, your inventory will be overflowing with minor health and attack runes. Leaving your early gear slots empty because you are waiting for a "perfect" weapon is a mathematical error.
